For the second time on Thursday, the 2013 U.S. Open is in a weather delay. A morning delay pushed opening-round play back three-and-a-half hours and now players have been taken off the course a second time.
U.S. Open 2013: Weather delay halts the 1st round again at Merion
A second weather delay hit the U.S. Open as the horn blew and players are headed off the course.
Rain has been an issue all week at the Merion Golf Club and the issue persists. A storm pushed through, but officials aren’t ruling out getting back on the course on Thursday. An official said players will be held in place as officials monitor the weather radar and determine how to proceed. Regardless, the weather has had a major impact as many players are still in their first nine holes while 15 players have yet to tee off.
With a crowded field and slow play, the delay could cause serious issues in the coming days, possibly forcing a Monday finish. There is also some concern of how the course will hold up. The grounds crew worked diligently during the week to get the course in playing condition. The course was able to withstand the morning rain, but if rain persists, issues could arise. The 11th hole is the biggest concern as Cobb’s Creek around the green has flooded in the past. If the green floods again, officials may have to incorporate holes from Merion’s West Course.
