Merion’s teeth were biting on Friday morning, and the first round restart featured one ugly shot after another as the best golfers in the world hit it all over the place. But by far the most ridiculous moment of the morning, and probably the day, came just before 9 a.m. with Carl Pettersson standing over his ball on the fifth fairway.

It’s getting ugly at Merion.
The portly Swede was at address, took his club back, and was about to begin his downswing when a ball from another hole came bounding through his fairway. The ball knocked Pettersson’s ball and he was able to stop his swing, back off, look around in wonder, and chuckle:
The ESPN broadcast identified it as the ball of Brandon Crick, a sectional qualifier who was 7-over and had yet to make a birdie on his first tour at the U.S. Open.
Merion is a small venue that’s packed with 156 golfers zig-zagging, but the odds of this bocce ball moment are incredibly low. Pettersson was allowed to place his ball back in its original spot, but he went on to make double-bogey at the par-5. It will likely be his only appearance on the Friday broadcast, but it’s a memorable one.
