The third round of the 2013 U.S. Open is in full swing and the entire field is currently on the course at Merion. Tiger Woods found some early success, but is even on the round after dropping a shot at No. 3.
U.S. Open 2013 leaderboard: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson even early in the 3rd round
The lead groups are now on the course, but the leaderboard remains relatively unchanged as no player has made a significant run yet.
Woods got off to a good start, drilling his opening tee shot into the fairway with a 1-iron. While his approach shot left a 15-foot putt for birdie, it was a tricky putt with a huge break. Woods read the break and speed of the green perfectly, rolling in the birdie putt to move to 2-over for the tournament. He appeared prime for another solid birdie opportunity on No. 2, but his wedge into the green came up well short. He two-putted for par, but couldn’t save par on the 3rd hole. A short tee shot and a poor chip left Woods with a tricky par putt and his attempt just burned the left edge, dropping him back to even on the day.
While Woods is back to even, a number of players are currently in the red on the round. Thirteen players are under par on the round, led by Rickie Fowler, who is 2-under through seven holes. However, that doesn’t mean Merion is playing easy. Sergio Garcia ran into trouble on No. 15, hitting three tee shots out of bounds. After carding an eight on the 15th hole on Thursday, Garcia finished with a 10 on the hole on Saturday. Shawn Stefani is having even bigger issues. He finished the front nine on Saturday at 11-over and is now 16-over for the tournament.
Phil Mickelson and the rest of the leaders just teed off and are headed to the second hole after pars on No. 1. Here is a quick look at the leaderboard and a few notable names.
