Conditions at Merion Golf Club are supposed to be more favorable on Saturday, but many of the leaders have yet to take advantage. Phil Mickelson and Billy Horschel bogeyed No. 3, dropping them out of the lead.
U.S. Open 2013 leaderboard: Phil Mickelson drops out of the lead, Tiger Woods 5 back
It’s been rough going for the leaders early on at Merion as Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are over par on the day.
Mickelson and Horschel are now tied for second place at even par, with John Senden leading the tournament at 1-under. Senden birdied his first two holes to become one of three players in the red. Mickelson and Horschel have had to scramble a bit early as both found the rough of the Par 5 second hole, taking birdie out of play. They both missed par putts on No. 3, dropping them out of the red.
Tiger Woods got a shot back early, but a bogey on No. 3 moved him back to even par. Woods had success on Merion’s two Par 5s in the first two rounds -- playing the Par 5s at 3-under -- but parred both holes on Saturday. Woods dropped to 1-over for the day with a bogey on No. 5. Rory McIlroy also missed opportunities to make up ground on the early holes, bogeying two of his first three holes to drop to 4-over for the tournament.
While a few notable names have been unable to make a move, Edward Loar is 3-under on the day and now tied for seventh place. Loar eagled the second hole before a birdie on the very difficult Par 4 fourth hole. Here is a quick look at the leaderboard with a few other notable names.
