Par continues to be a good score on Saturday at the U.S. Open as players continue to struggle to post anything better than average. Most of the leaders have been able to hover around par, but Tiger Woods is going the wrong direction and has fallen seven strokes off the lead.
U.S. Open leaderboard: Charl Schwartzel leads, Tiger Woods struggling
Charl Schwartzel is the latest player to grab a share of the lead at the U.S. Open while Tiger Woods is playing his way out of contention.
Hole No. 10 has been the second-easiest hole this week, but Woods ran into trouble on the short Par 4 on Saturday. He chose to lay up off the tee, but didn’t hit a very good tee shot. His approach shot was also off, leaving 40 feet to go for a potential birdie. Woods’ putt slid by the hole, however, and he missed the comeback, forcing him to settle for a three-putt bogey. Woods is now 3-over on the round through 10 holes and 6-over for the tournament.
Schwartzel is 2-under on the day and currently the only player under par for the tournament. He bogeyed No. 2, but recovered with back-to-back birdies at No. 3 and No. 4. He added another birdie at No. 7 to move into the red. Schwartzel is currently one of nine players under par in the third round. Amateur Michael Kim is also 2-under on the round and is now two strokes off the lead at 1-over.
Phil Mickelson remains in contention, two strokes off the lead at 1-over. Mickelson doesn’t have a birdie on the day, but has managed to stay in contention with a few par saves. Mickelson is currently one of 13 players within three strokes of the lead.
