Tiger Woods may be on board with the USGA’s pace-of-play initiative, but judging by his par on the short, short par-3 13th hole on Saturday at Merion, we’re guessing he won’t be joining Jack Nicklaus on the forward tees.

With the leaders midway through their third round on Saturday, a third of the field had feasted on the 98-yard par-3 13th hole. Tiger Woods was not one of them.

Woods, whose backward chip shot on the sixth hole pretty much summed up his day, was not among a third of the field that feasted on the 98-yard par-3. At 5-over through 17 of his forgettable third round (8-over for the week, 10 shots behind co-leaders Charl Schwartzel and Luke Donald). The par on 13 was hardly the lowlight of a round that saw Golf Channel’s Tiger Tracker throwing in the towel.

The USGA set up the 13th to play as the second-shortest hole in the history of our national championship, according to Devil Ball Golf, which noted that the 92-yard seventh at Pebble Beach during the 2010 U.S. Open holds the shortest-ever honors.
By the time the penultimate threesome of Justin Rose, John Senden and Steve Stricker arrived at the 13th, 22 of their 67 compatriots had already rapped in for two. Rose’s birdie made it 23.
Woods birdied the hole Thursday and Friday, when the hole played 102 yards and 123 yards, respectively.
