The final round of the 2013 U.S. Open is in full swing and after a brief tie atop the leaderboard, Phil Mickelson is back to being alone in the lead.
2013 U.S. Open leaderboard: Phil Mickelson opens par-par, leads by 1
There has been some early action in the final round, but Phil Mickelson is still leading the way.
On the first hole Sunday, Charl Schwartzel tied Mickelson at 1-under, but a subsequent bogey dropped him back to even par.
Schwartzel didn’t waste any time moving into the red with his birdie on No. 1. He hit an excellent approach shot and though he misread the putt slightly, his ball hung on the lip of the cup and just rolled in. The ball was millimeters away from staying up. He didn’t have the same luck on No. 3 as his par putt didn’t drop and he fell out of the lead.
Mickelson nearly matched Schwartzel’s birdie at one, but Mickelson’s birdie putt had too much pace and lipped out after catching the right edge. Mickelson had another birdie opportunity on No. 2, but was unable to capitalize on a terrific wedge shot and once again settled for par.
The final round has not started well for Steve Stricker or Billy Horschel. Horschel bogeyed two of his first three holes to drop to 3-over. Stricker triple-bogeyed the second hole after he hit two shots out of bounds. His second out of bounds shot came when he shanked an iron from the fairway.
