Jerry Kelly has been to this rodeo before, so when the nine-time U.S. Open contestant says it’s a real grind trying to qualify for his country’s major championship, you know he speaks from experience.
Walking in Memphis: Jerry Kelly grinds out a 65 in U.S. Open qualifying at Colonial
36 holes in one day ahead of a PGA Tour event later in the week is a lot for self-described geezer Jerry Kelly.
“Getting old gets old, that’s the bottom line,” Kelly, who fired an opening-round 5-under 67 at Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tenn., to tie for second place in the first leg of Marathon Monday, said about what wears on players during golf’s longest day.
“I’m gimping around out there,” the 46-year-old Kelly, who’s in the field for this week’s FedEx St. Jude Classic, told Golf Channel’s Scott Walker midway through his grueling day. “It doesn’t affect my swing; it’s just walking this long, it gets to you.”
Kelly, who has three wins on the PGA Tour, talked about the exhaustion of competing for 36 holes ahead of Thursday’s start, also in Memphis.
“I’m really tired after ... 36 in one day in a beginning of a tournament week,” Kelly said. “It’s a tough grind out here all the time.”
