British Open 2013 leaderboard: Adam Scott leads, Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood 1 back

A year after his four-stroke lead evaporated over the final four holes, Adam Scott is once again leading the British Open. He’s currently 2-under, one stroke ahead of Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood.

Scott was 2-over through his first six holes, but caught fire as he made the turn with birdies on nos. 7, 8 and 9. He added another birdie at No. 11 to take over sole possession of the lead. Scott appeared on his way to winning the Claret Jug last year, but could redeem that performance over the final seven holes on Sunday.

Like Scott, Phil Mickelson is also making a charge and is currently in position, one stroke off the lead. Mickelson made the turn at 2-under then carded back-to-back birdies at No. 13 and No. 14 to move into the red. Mickelson has had issues on 15 and 16 this week, but will need to avoid trouble on Sunday if he’s going to have a chance.

Westwood led for much of the round, but two bogeys on his final three holes on the front nine dropped him to 1-under. He’s only hit one fairway thus far and has been unable to take advantage of a few birdie opportunities. With as well as Scott and Mickelson are playing, Westwood may need a birdie or two if he’s going to remain in contention for his first major championship.

Tiger Woods has fallen off the lead with five bogeys on his first 11 holes. He’s 3-over for the tournament, five strokes off the lead. Here is a complete look at the top of the leaderboard.
