2013 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational: Tiger Woods to seek record 8th win at Firestone

Tiger Woods hopes to put his disappointing British Open finish behind him when he returns to the friendly confines of Firestone Country Club in next week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Woods has won the event a record seven times, though not since 2009, the world No. 1 noted on his website Thursday, when he made things official.

“This is one of my favorite courses. There is nothing tricky about it; everything is right in front of you,” said Woods, who complained frequently about how the slow greens at Muirfield frustrated his efforts to win a 15th major. “And the fans do a great job of supporting the event.”

It’s no surprise that this is the next appearance for Tiger -- it will always hold an esteemed spot on his limited schedule. Woods has four tour wins this season but is 0-for-3 in major tilts in 2013 and has come up empty in his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus’ mark of 18 major titles since 2008. He’ll go for tour win No. 79 in Akron, Ohio, and try to rev up his game for the fourth and final major, the PGA Championship, which will start the following week.

Woods tied for sixth at the Open Championship, finishing five strokes behind surprise victor Phil Mickelson, who earned his first British Open title and fifth major triumph overall.
