If Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson were going to play their way back into contention, they needed to go low on moving day at the PGA Championship. Instead, the opposite happened and Woods and Mickelson have dropped further over par in the early going.
PGA Championship 2013 leaderboard: Struggles continue for Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were longshots heading into the weekend, but have fallen even further back off the lead.
Woods’ issues started early as he drove his opening tee shot into the rough. He was barely able to advance his ball out of the second cut and went on to make a bogey. He’s also had issues on the greens this week and that was once again the case on No. 3. He had a long birdie putt, which didn’t come close to the hole leaving 12 feet for par. His par attempt was offline from the start, leading to another bogey.
Many players have racked up birdies on the front nine this week, like Justin Rose, who shot a 29 on that nine on Friday. Woods hasn’t had the same success, playing the opening nine holes at 3-over thus far. His quest for a 15th career major championship is going to have to wait until at least next April and the 2014 Masters.
Phil Mickelson began his day with two pars and a birdie, but his round has unraveled from there. A bogey on No. 4 dropped him to even for the day. Mickelson’s tee shot on No. 7 was way off target, leaving him in some of Oak Hill’s deep rough. It took him four shots from there to find the green and he went on to make a triple bogey. A bogey at No. 9 dropped him to 6-over and his tournament is also over.
Dustin Johnson has done what Mickelson and Woods hoped to do. Johnson began the day at 3-over and narrowly made the cut, but he carded a 5-under 65 in the third round. Johnson has jumped 45 spots up the leaderboard and is now in a tie for 15th place.
Here’s a look at how some of the early notables have fared on Saturday.
