PGA Championship 2013 leaderboard: Phil Mickelson implodes, Tiger Woods goes nowhere

Oak Hill has toughened up a bit on Saturday, with the wind up and no overnight rain for the first time this week, but there are still some low scores available at the PGA Championship. Dustin Johnson is the early pacesetter in the third round, going out early in the morning to post a 5-under round of 65.

That score has pushed DJ more than 40 spots up the leaderaboard into a current tie for 16th. He started the day so far back that, at 2-under, he’s still seven shots behind leader Jason Dufner but he has demonstrated that big moves can be made. Kevin Streelman was right on Dustin’s heels and posted a 4-under round of 66 to move into the red for the week.

The mid-60s are within range, just not for the top two players in the world. Both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were desperate on Saturday, needing rounds in the mid-60s to even get in position for a Sunday run. Mickelson even put the driver back in his bag for the do-or-die round, but both players have tumbled dramatically in the wrong direction.

Tiger turned in 2-over 37, officially ending his hopes for a 15th major. The No. 1 player in the world has since added a birdie to get to 2-over for the championship, but at this point, he’s just working on his swing and playing out the string. His private jet will be at the ready early tomorrow, as he flies home and has to wait another six months before getting a crack at his 15th major championship.

Phil said he needed to go super low on Friday to get back in it but he instead added a stroke after another middling round. That made Saturday particularly dire, which will always create some interesting predicaments for Lefty. Mickelson, as you’d expect when he goes for it, has blown up on several holes. He triple bogeyed the seventh hole, taking four strokes from about 15 yards off the green. He turned in 39, and it didn’t get any better for the deflated and checked out world No. 2. Mickelson came into the clubhouse with a third round 78 and is in second-to-last place. He may be out in the first group and gone before the broadcast even comes on at 11 a.m. Sunday. It’s a disappointment for Phil, to be sure, but after last month at Muirfield, he walks away from the summer and majors season happy.
