2013 PGA Championship leaderboard: Jason Day limps in after early run

For a moment it looked like Jason Day may challenge the leaders. A rough closing stretch eliminated the possibility and Day finished at 3-under.

Following his seventh birdie of the round, Jason Day was 6-under through 14 holes with a chance to post a low score and challenge the leaders. He was 6-under overall, three strokes off the lead. Another birdie or two coming in and Day could have tied or set the course record while posting a score close to the lead.

Day’s charge up the leaderboard came to an abrupt end, however, and he finished well off the lead. Day ran into trouble off the tee on No. 14. He managed to make par from the rough, though it proved to be a sign of issues to come. His tee shot on No. 16 again found Oak Hill’s thick rough and this time Day couldn’t avoid a dropped shot. He ran into the same issue on No. 17, with another bogey.

His tee shot on the final hole landed in the fairway bunker. Day went on to card his third straight bogey, erasing most of the ground he made up during his hot streak earlier in the round. He’s played well in the majors this season, finishing third at the Masters and in a tie for second at the U.S. Open. It looks like he’ll add a third top-10 finish to that list this week as he’s tied for eighth.

Although he’s played well, Day has had issues closing out his final rounds while contending on a Sunday in a major. In addition to his bogey-bogey-bogey finish today, Day bogeyed Nos. 16 and No. 17 while leading on Sunday at Augusta. He’s one of the most talented young players in golf and certainly has the game to win a major, but his first major will now have to wait until at least next season.
