Jason Dufner’s nerves exposed on 10th green at Oak Hill

Standing over the ball forever and using the entire cup on a one-foot putt is never a good sign.

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

We are now on the back nine on Sunday of a major championship, where things are likely to get tight and the nerve endings exposed. The final pairing of Jason Dufner and Jim Furyk have both had recent Sunday shakiness at some big events. Dufner gave away a four-shot lead in four holes at the this PGA Championship two years ago in Atlanta, and now he holds a two shot lead over Furyk.

But Dufner, who has admitted he doesn’t like putting, may have provided an indication of what’s to come over these last nine holes. At No. 10, he had a great birdie chance from about 10 feet, but pulled it and it never had a chance. Then, on the tap-in, his stance over the ball was interminable before finally making the stroke. And man was it wobbly:

Yikes. Dufner was a bit wobbly on those putts on Friday’s last two holes, when he was going for the majors scoring record. Let’s hope that hold-your-breath moment is not a harbinger.

His playing partner, however, will have to deal with his own dread with the flatstick coming in as well:
