Tiger Woods is not in the field for this week’s PGA Tour stop in Greensboro, N.C., the Wyndham Challenge, but the world No. 1 will be back at it next Thursday when the FedEx Cup playoffs begin at Liberty National Golf Club.
Major-less Tiger Woods will resurface at The Barclays to launch 2013 FedExCup
Even though his chance of winning a major in 2013 major is now gone, Tiger Woods has a busy stretch coming up, beginning with The Barclays next week in New Jersey.

Woods confirmed via Andy Borowitz’ Duh Magazine (actually, on the golfer’s website on Tuesday) that he has committed to play in The Barclays, the first leg of the tour’s four season-ending playoff events in Jersey City, N.J. The leader in FedEx Cup points, Woods is a two-time winner (2007 and 2009) of the FedEx Cup and its gaudy $10 million payout.
A FedEx Cup victory for Woods, who has five wins so far this season and will start in his fourth Barclays, would make him the only golfer to hit the jackpot three times since the inception of the series seven years ago. Tiger chose to skip the tourney in 2007, was sidelined with an injury the following year, and did not qualify in 2011.
The top 125 players in FedEx Cup points will comprise the field for The Barclays, which will winnow the number down to 100 for the Deutsch Bank Championship over Labor Day weekend at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. Following that tilt, the top 70 golfers will tee it up at the BMW Championship at Conway Farms GC in Lake Forrest, Ill., and the last contest, the Tour Championship at East Lake GC in Atlanta, will feature the top 30 who advance to the grand finale.
Which brings us back to the Wyndham Championship, where 2012 FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker looks to win his third tour event of the season and pad his current third-place position with 500 more points. Snedeker, who emerged victorious from Greensboro in 2007, will play the first two rounds at Sedgefield CC with defending champ Sergio Garcia and Webb Simpson, the 2011 winner.
In other Tiger news, his annual and unofficial, though tour co-sponsored, World Challenge signed Northwestern Mutual, formerly a presenting sponsor, as title sponsor. The Tiger Woods Foundation will host the limited-field Northwestern Mutual World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif., from December 5-December 8, Woods announced on his website Tuesday.
Woods, who in 2012 reportedly footed the $4 million bill for tourney operating costs following Chevron’s decision not to renew sponsorship after four years, will vie with 17 other top golfers for the $1 million purse.
Tiger will also headline the sixth annual Notah Begay III Foundation Challenge, a fundraising golf tourney with a supporting case of 11 other A-listers, including Lee Westwood, Rickie Fowler, and Henrik Stenson, who will split into three teams. The event, which benefits the NB3 Foundation’s support of health and wellness programs for Native American youth, will take place on August 28 at Turning Stone Resort’s Atunyote GC and be the focus of Golf Channel coverage via an extended “Morning Drive” program that morning.
Woods stops in on his former Stanford teammate’s tournament each year before making his way to the Deutsche Bank Championship, which, with its Labor Day Monday finish, starts on August 30.
