Tiger Woods, nursing back injury, expected to continue 2013 FedExCup playoffs in Boston

Tiger Woods, whose sore back flared up during The Barclays last week, will tee it up starting Friday in the second leg of the FedExCup series at TPC Boston.

Tiger Woods, bad back and all, plans to make his regularly scheduled start in this week’s Deutsche Bank Championship.

"He is expected to play," Rachel Rees, public relations manager for the Tiger Woods Foundation, which runs the second of four FedExCup playoff tournaments, told SBNation via email on Monday. "[Woods] will have a press conference post pro-am round on Thursday."

Woods exited Sunday’s Barclays tourney with a share of second place and an air of uncertainty about whether his stiff back, which went into spasm during the final round at Liberty National, would enable him to participate in the Labor Day weekend contest that benefits his charity.

“That’s all hypothetical right now,” Woods, who finished a shot behind Adam Scott last week, told reporters Sunday night about his ability to play this week. “I just got off and I’m not feeling my best right now.”

Woods crumpled to the ground in pain midway through his back nine Sunday but rallied and came up a rotation of the golf ball shy of forcing a playoff with Scott.

“The tee shot there [at No. 12] started it,” said Woods, who began the week by blaming a soft hotel mattress for his back injury. “Thirteen just accentuated it. I felt great until the tee shot at 12. I was perfectly fine.”

Apparently the ongoing treatments Woods has been receiving for his sore sacroiliac are doing the trick and the 79-time PGA Tour winner will give it a go starting Friday at TPC Boston. Woods, Scott and Phil Mickelson -- Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in the world golf rankings and FedExCup standings, respectively -- are slated to play the first two rounds together in the tourney that will finish (barring weather delays) on Labor Day Monday.
