Bridgestone Invitational leaderboard: Tiger Woods sinks incredible chip shot, extends lead to 8 shots

Just when it looked like Tiger Woods might drop a shot and shave the margin to six, the world’s top-ranked player went ahead and flipped the expectation of a bogey into a birdie by sinking an incredible chip shot from the greenside rough at No. 13.

The shot was set up by the CBS crew of Gary McCord and David Feherty stating that it looked like a hole where Woods might pick up his second bogey of the day with a four being extremely difficult, and it ended with the ball in the jar and Woods lapping the field to get to 16-under. Jason Dufner is hopelessly behind in second at 8-under, but the two-shot turn was just another incredible moment in one of the more dominant 36-hole stretches for Tiger. Dufner started his round with birdies on his first four holes and has picked up seven red numbers through his first 13. Unfortunately for the Northeast Ohio native, however, he’s added a bogey and a double to prevent things from becoming even slightly uncomfortable for the leader.

Saturday’s third round won’t come close to matching the fireworks of Friday’s 61, but Woods will still card his third straight round under par and in the 60s. The outcome of the Bridgestone was decided Friday night with the weekend serving more as an informal march to victory as well as a challenge to see just how far Tiger could extend his victory margin.

Woods opened the third round with birdies on his first two holes, but “cooled” off a bit as it went on. “Cooled off” being a completely relative term for the best player in a generation. He made the turn with a 1-under 34 and has added two more red numbers in his first four holes on the back side.

There’s no doubt Woods will be adding his 18th WGC title and eighth win at Firestone on Sunday with the rest of the 73-man field playing for second place. As is the case at all WGC events, by the way the field is loaded from top to bottom and 48 of the top 50 in the world are in attendance, making the Tiger’s runaway dominance all the more impressive.
