Phil Mickelson finishes with double bogey, then hits range balls in the dark at Oak Hill
After a long day, Phil tries to work things out in the gloaming at Oak Hill.
Phil Mickelson was a bit off all day at Oak Hill, his alignment from the tee never quite right. He started 3-over through the first four holes, before a rain delay in the middle of his round allowed him to regroup and work on his swing caddie Jim Mackay. It looked like he found what was going wrong, as he made a charge after the delay and got from 3-over to 1-under.
But all the work to get into the red came undone down the stretch. Phil was extremely wild off the tee, hitting a drive off the yard on the par-5 No. 13 and then going wide left again at the 18th. The wayward tee ball led to an adventure trying to get out of the trees and back on the fairway, which took two attempts. The result was a finishing double bogey, the same mark made by Tiger Woods on his last hole, which also dropped him to 1-over for the championship.
With an 8:35 a.m. ET tee time on Friday and the hour delay resulting in a late Thursday finish, Phil realized he didn’t have much time to try and work things out on the range. So with little to no daylight, Phil proceeded to theange with Bones for a session in the Rochester gloaming, creating this cool visual:
In addition to Bones, Phil made the request to have coach Butch Harmon join him for the impromptu session, so you know he’s concerned late on Thursday:

But can he really see where those are going? Sometimes, with Phil, it’s better not to know where they end up.
