The PGA Championship resumes on Friday morning in Rochester, with a leaderboard stocked with the top players in the world. The top two, however, are six shots back of leaders Adam Scott and Jim Furyk. Both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson dominated headlines in the week leading up to the season’s final major, but both finished their first round with a double bogey on their last hole to fall all the way to 1-over. It was a disappointing showing for both, but as we saw on Thursday, Oak Hill is gettable and each is capable of firing a round in the mid-to-low 60s to get right back in it. But as Phil indicated after his first round, Friday is really do-or-die now, given the margin.

There will be no morning TV coverage again on Friday at the PGA, but once the cameras come on in the afternoon, Tiger Woods will be under the spotlight as he tries to make up ground at Oak Hill.

Unlike the British Open and U.S. Open, the PGA Championship does not have early morning TV coverage in the first two rounds. It’s not as restrictive as the antiquated broadcast rules imposed by the curmudgeons at Augusta National, but with half of the 156 players out in the morning, it’s still disappointing. TNT will once again have the coverage on Friday, coming on the air at 1 p.m. ET and carrying the broadcast until 7 p.m. On Thursday, they extended the broadcast one hour because of a weather delay, so if it’s looking like some of the bigger afternoon groups will go late, they’ll likely stay on past 7 p.m. again.
The marquee group during the TV coverage window will, of course, feature No. 1 in the world, Tiger Woods. It was a disastrous finish on Thursday for Woods, who dropped two shots with the double on his final hole. The Thursday morning course conditions were favorable, with scores in the mid-60s available. But Tiger was sloppy on his second nine, and it finally got away from him on his last hole as he went from the red to 1-over. The additional rain late Thursday further softened up the course and allowed the players to take aim at the flagstick, but Woods could encounter a different, drier track and be at a disadvantage by playing in the afternoon wave on Friday. That’s what made Thursday’s squandered chances so critical.
TNT and the PGA Championship broadcast is infamous for being commercial-heavy. There’s a lot of... filler, and not a ton of golf shots shown. That said, expect every single stroke by Woods to be carried by TNT. Here’s Friday’s TV and media schedule:
