PGA Championship 2013: Woody Austin, notorious hothead, penalized for extra club in bag

Happy times at Oak Hill.

Hunter Martin

Woody Austin is one of golf’s great hotheads. So you can imagine he’s not doing too well on Friday morning at the PGA Championship, where it was discovered that he had 15 clubs in his bag. That’s one over the legal limit, and Austin didn’t discover the problem until he was in the middle of his third hole. That right there is an inexcusable four-stroke penalty, two for each hole played with the extra club in his bag. That promptly moved him from 1-under to 4-over, beginning the day with a double-bogey and triple bogey start and put him right on the early cut line. He’s back to 3-over and just on the wrong side of the cut line after his first nine holes.

Austin is notorious for losing his mind in anger. There was the instance where he broke his putter over his own head:

And here was that time he launched his golf ball into a pond and then beat the hell out of his golf bag after missing a shorter putt:

Yikes.

The extra club blunder brings back memories of Ian Woosnam at the British Open, when he was in contention and playing well but started his round with an extra driver in his bag. Woosnam chewed out his caddie and then launched the club against a nearby tree.

Woozy parted ways with the caddie shortly thereafter. Given Austin’s temper, I wouldn’t want to be his looper right now.
