The second round of the 2013 PGA Championship is in the books, and it was a birdie fest at Oak Hill, where Jason Dufner stormed to the lead by matching a majors scoring record with a round of 63. Dufner now sits in the lead by two, his 7-under round of 63 pushing him all the to the top at 9-under for the week.
PGA Championship 2013 scores: Jason Dufner takes lead at Oak Hill, Tiger Woods stalls
Friday provided some of the better scoring conditions you will ever see at a major, as Jason Dufner went record-matching low while Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods stalled out at Oak Hill.

It started early for Dufner on Friday, as the Auburn product’s record round sprung to life with an eagle on his second hole. The number was a result of Dufner’s pinpoint approach at the shorter par-4. Holding a short iron, Dufner sent his ball about 30 feet past the cup, spinning it back down for the hole-out eagle:
And with that, he was off. It jolted him to 4-under for championship, but he would can two more birdies on the front side to turn in 31. It appeared Dufner would finally break the record of 63 (held by 23 others), but he burned the edge with his birdie try on No. 17 and left a makeable 15-foot birdie putt on 18 short of the hole.
Adam Scott, who held the lead for most of the first two days in Rochester, is tied with two others for second place at 7-under. Scott was out early in the morning, playing in the rain before 9 a.m. ET. His anchored putter was once again rolling and it looked like he might run away with it. But a couple bogeys coming in to the house dropped him to 7-under, opening up the Dufner chasedown on the gettable layout. Even with the two-shot deficit, he’s the trendy favorite heading into the weekend.
Matt Kuchar and Jim Furyk came out in the afternoon and improved upon their first round scores to match Scott in second at 7-under. Kuchar was right on the heels of Dufner through the first half of his round, and finished with a 66. He’s a top-five player in the world who’s been right there in the top 10 at multiple majors, but he’s never broken through to add a career-defining win to a resume full of accomplishments and big paydays. Furyk, who held the first-round lead with Scott, was steady in the second round to shoot 68 and stay right in the mix. The aging vet with the funky swing is trying to forget the collapses of last year at Olympic, the Bridgestone, and the Ryder Cup, by clinching a second-career major.
Two players who failed to make a move in the perfect scoring conditions were Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the top two golfers in the world who dominated the headlines in the run-up to the season’s final major. Mickelson was adamant on Thursday night that he needed a round in the low 60s on Friday to get back in it. He was going aggressive in an attempt to post super low, but that effort was washed away in the morning with a 1-over round of 71. He’s now 2-over for the week, 11 shots back of the lead, and may be playing out the string in non-contenion.
Tiger was right there with Phil when it came to underwhelming play in the second round. Woods was mediocre to poor in several facets -- off the tee, ball-striking, iron play and putting. And his frustration showed repeatedly throughout the day:
He finished with an even-par round of 70 to stall out at 1-over. It’s well-known that Woods struggles coming from behind at the majors. His wins always come when he takes a stranglehold of the lead at the 36 and 54-hole mark. With a 10-shot deficit, it’s looking like another major-less summer for the world No. 1.
Even with those two superstars way down the leaderboard, the top is still absolutely loaded with some of the best players in the world. The first three majors were won by players who were inside the top 7 in the world rankings at the time of their victory, and that’s the caliber of player that populates the top 10. Both Masters champ Scott and U.S. Open winner Justin Rose are in position to get their second major title of the season. Here’s the full board after 36 holes:
