Furyk, who carded an outgoing 8-under 28, failed to qualify for the U.S. squad, which will meet the Internationals next month at Jack Nicklaus’ Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. He also lost out to rookie phenom Jordan Spieth and 2012 U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson, Couples’ two wild-card picks for the Americans’ 12-player unit.

The 2010 FedExCup champion, Furyk entered the third of four FEC playoff matches ranked 15th. After an opening-round 1-over 72, the 43-year-old Furyk, who has six top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour this season, went on a scoring rampage on Friday. He made six birdies and an eagle on the outgoing nine (he started on the 10th hole) and had Golf Channel viewers on the edges of their seats as he jammed in three straight birdies on holes two through four.
A bogey on the par-4 fifth interrupted speculation that Furyk would go even lower than 59, but he got that shot back with a birdie on seven and the watch was back on. A tap-in birdie putt on his final hole, and Furyk entered the record books with a 59.
