Deutsche Bank Championship error by Fox anchor won’t go over well in Ponte Vedra

After a local TV anchor completely mangled the name of last week’s PGA Tour event, the second of four FedExCup playoff tourneys, Fox Sports may want to offer a tutorial in the correct pronunciations of golf events it will begin to broadcast in the coming years.

Fox Carolina’s Aaron Cheslock made easy look wicked hard when, as he was running down the headlines from last week’s Deutsche Bank Championship, couldn’t quite get the name of the contest right, as this blooper reel can attest:

Fox surprised the golf world recently when the network signed a 12-year contract with the U.S. Golf Association to begin broadcasting the U.S. Open, among other USGA tilts, in 2015.

CBS, NBC, ESPN, and the Golf Channel have commissioner Tim Finchem’s PGA Tour events covered at least through 2019, though once Fox gets its foot in the door, who knows what the future holds? Finchem weighed in on the news ahead of last week’s tour stop at TPC Boston.

“It’s always nice to have multiple entities in the sport,” Finchem told reporters last Wednesday. “There are positives, a few negatives, but there are positives, to have companies invested in the sport in any way results in more focus on the sport from those broadcast companies ... There will be some transition challenges there, but I think it’s to your advantage long‑term to have them involved. We’ve talked to Fox a number of times in the last 10, 15 years, and we just never got to arrangement, but we know they have an interest.”

Looks like it’s time for another one of those talks, eh, commish?
