John Daly, fresh from a sweep of the fashion awards at last week’s Sony Open, put a new club in play during Monday’s Humana Challenge pro-am and promptly aced the par-3 seventh hole at PGA West.

In the annals of John Daly golf history, this may go down as nothing more than a footnote, but Big John holes out from the tee during the Humana Challenge pro-am and wins a new car, only to realize later that it was his second shot and merely a par.

Except the 154-yard hole-in-one that Big John believed had won him a shiny new Hyundai Equus wasn’t what it appeared, since Daly had already hit a practice shot with another club.

New Drive for Phil
Don’t look now, but Phil Mickelson’s singing the praises of another new club and the world’s No. 5 golfer believes the Callaway driver could take him to the promised land -- the 2014 U.S. Open title. “I didn’t even look at the shot,” Daly told the San Diego Union’s Tod Leonard about the stroke he made with a new Callaway 9-iron a delegate from Carlsbad had just put in his hands. “I leaned over to get my tee and was telling the Callaway representative that it felt pretty good. He said, ‘Good, because it just went in the hole.’ ”
Daly, cheered on by several members of his brood, was looking forward to his new ride.
“Trust me,” he said, “with three kids I will put the new Hyundai to good use.”
Alas, looks like the golfer whose last PGA Tour win came 10 years ago next week at the Farmers Insurance Open will have to rely on the wheels of the motor home he parks down the road from Augusta National each April for transport for a while longer.
Daly, who is not in the field at Torrey Pines, finished in a tie for 32nd place at Waialae after returning from elbow surgery and opening with a 4-under 66 that put him briefly in the hunt for his sixth tour victory.
