John Daly Pizza: Grip it and Eat it!

John Daly is diversifying. In addition to shilling for SpongeBob SquarePants and selling vodka drinks under his own name, he hopes to launch a pizza kitchen franchise on golf courses across the country.

John Daly and his wild and crazy pants may be on the other side of the earth from Orlando, but the Florida site of this week’s PGA Merchandise Show is playing host to Long John’s newest venture -- John Daly Pizza.

If Daly, the two-time major champion of “grip it and rip it” fame, can make a go of his own line of pizza restaurants, pie lovers will soon be able to “Grip it and Eat it” at golf courses nationwide -- and, no doubt, wash it down with a swig of a John Daly Cocktail.

While Daly has a decent week in Qatar (T44 at 3-under after three rounds), his booth in Orlando is giving away slices to hungry exhibition-goers in hopes that among the diners will be an investor or two looking to make a score with the Loudmouth-wearing big bomber from Arkansas.

“He loves this, man. It’s all fun,” the pizza joint’s co-founder Jimmy Howell, who’s staffing the kiosk in Florida, told Golf Digest.com on Thursday. “I shot him an email after yesterday and told him how packed we were yesterday. He was excited.”

Howell, by the way, adds gravitas to the Daly-as-pizza-king concept. As the operator of Perky’s Pizza in Tampa for 25 years, he urged his big-name partner to go all in with him on the business.

If you’re stuck in the polar vortex in the Northeast and unable to make it down to the Sunshine State to write out a check to underwrite the venture, check out the pizza kitchen’s website and Twitter account for more info. So, that’s happening.

Oh, and should golfers at the turn grow weary and wary of that frankfurt that’s been steaming in its own juices since last season, Daly’s cheesy delight may be just the thing -- especially since each pizza box will come with a John Daly ball marker. That’s a win-win for all.

“Instead of a hot dog or a burger that every golf course has, this is a fun idea to give people something different,” Howell said. “And everybody loves pizza.”
