Watch Rickie Fowler use putter out of a sand trap, with poor results

This curious play was fun to watch, but part of a double bogey 6 for Fowler on Sunday at Isleworth.

It’s hard to figure out what exactly Rickie Fowler was trying to accomplish with this approach out of a bunker on Sunday at the Hero World Challenge. He did put his ball short side in a bunker, with a pin tucked just on top of the trap. His ball was also towards the front of the trap on a lie that looked slightly downhill.

So instead of taking the normal pass through with a wedge and popping it out and on, Fowler blasted it with the putter, the ball shooting up in the air as it hit the lip. It didn’t get close, at all -- the ball settling toward the back of the green and Fowler walking off with a double bogey. It was a fun shot to watch, but the execution and results were puzzling.
