2014 Northern Trust Open: Dustin Johnson takes first round lead at Riviera

Some big names populate the first page of the leaderboard in LA, paced by America’s best young talent, Dustin Johnson.

Stephen Dunn

For the second straight week, the PGA Tour was unable to wrap up the opening Thursday round as scheduled. This week, however, weather had nothing to do with play being called due to darkness, as the full field was unable to maneuver through Riviera before the sun went down in Los Angeles. Slow play continues to be a theme through the first seven weeks of the season, and 15 players needing to come back Friday and finish up certainly won’t make it go away.

Fortunately, the last groups are already through 16 holes, and they’re already scheduled to play in the morning wave so it won’t be too big a problem. J.B. Holmes, one of those with two holes still to finish, is the one player who could chase down first round leader Dustin Johnson. I wrote earlier Friday when he took the morning wave lead into the clubhouse that DJ is clearly the top American talent not named Tiger or Phil right now. He wins at least once a year, and given his second place finish last week at Pebble Beach and his form at Riviera on Thursday, it’s looking like it might come early again in 2014 (technically, he already has a win this “season” with the new PGA Tour’s wraparound schedule in play).

Johnson’s 5-under 66 was done largely by attacking the gettable par-5s at the classic LA layout. He carded birdies at all three of the par-5s, and made just one bogey, at the extremely difficult par-3 4th, to set the pace. There are 11 others one shot back at 4-under, but only Holmes still has holes left to play. With the poa annua putting surfaces freshened up and rolling better in the morning, it’s possible that Holmes jumps up to join DJ at 5-under. Even if he does, however, DJ should still be the favorite heading into the weekend.
