2014 Northern Trust Open: Tee times, pairings for Friday’s round

There should be four straight days of perfect weather in LA this weekend, but even with those conditions, the first round at Riviera will need to finish up on Friday morning.

The slow play problem at the highest levels of golf has been a continued and significant theme through the first two months of the season, and the pace of a jammed tee sheet resulted in another round cut short due to darkness at Riviera. There were still 15 players out on the course when play was suspended on Thursday night at the Northern Trust Open, with the last groups still to play two more holes. A full field PGA Tour event is logistical challenge during the first two days, especially during limited daylight hours, but the pace has to pick up.

Those 15 players will be out bright and early Friday morning, and fortunately they were already scheduled to play in the morning wave. To be sure, they will be at the course earlier than they expected, but it’s not the worst inconvenience to finish up those two holes, take a little break, and then head out at the tail end of the morning tee times.

There’s been no indication that the PGA Tour will push the original Friday tee times back. The last groups will finish up on the last few holes on each side, while tee times begin at Nos. 1 and 10 starting at 6:40 a.m. local time. It’s rare to see tee times on Tour before 7 a.m., so that’s about as early as it gets -- an effort to continue to get the entire field through 18 before dark.

This is a pretty loaded field, so there’s at least 10 solid players in each wave worth watching. But Dustin Johnson, the 18-hole leader, will not be out until late in the day and should be the focus of Golf Channel’s coverage. DJ will go at 3:12 p.m. ET with Justin Rose and Jim Furyk.

Unless there’s some fog that holds up play in the morning, everything should stay on schedule even with those players still needing to finish up the first round. Here’s the full tee sheet for Friday’s second round at Riviera, all times ET:
