Tiger Woods’ next swing coach: Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres?

Tiger Woods flailed himself out of contention early in Sunday’s final round of the Honda Classic, no doubt providing Johnny Miller et al with new ammo with which to take aim at the state of the golf swing of the world No. 1

“So the questions will keep popping up -- when will Tiger return to form,” Golf Channel’s Rich Lerner said Sunday after Woods missed yet another par putt on No. 9 to make the turn with an outward score of 5-over 40. “Usually by this point in the season we have a pretty good idea; he would have won, say, at Torrey Pines.

“Not this year,” Lerner added, referring to Woods’ first-ever 54-hole missed cut in his only other PGA Tour event in 2014, last month’s Farmers Insurance Open, on a track on which he has eight victories.

With Ellen DeGeneres returning to emcee the Academy Awards on Sunday night, it seemed like a good time to return to yesteryear (2006, to be precise) when the host of her popular namesake program went toe-to-toe with Tiger in a target-hitting contest to earn a copy of what appeared to be EASports’ Tiger Woods PGA Tour video game for each member of her audience.

Tiger, in the grips of coach Hank Haney at the time, drilled two drives dead center with a swing not even Brandel Chamblee could criticize and Ellen acquitted herself admirably as well.

“How good was that?” Woods exclaimed after DeGeneres nailed her tee shot. “Yeah! That was totally cool.”

Which is something absolutely no one will say about Tiger’s slopping Sunday finale.
