We’re only halfway through the first round of the Masters, but it appears Jason Dufner will not be going back-to-back in the major championships. The 13th hole at Augusta is usually one of the easiest on the entire course, a par-5 that yields lots of birdies and is even open to eagles. But the sharp dogleg left ate up Dufner, who went the other way and finished with a quadruple-bogey 9 to quickly end his shot at a green jacket.
Jason Dufner implodes with this ugly quadruple bogey at Augusta’s 13th hole
He’s going to need an extra-large pinch after this disastrous sequence up around the 13th green.
All was well for Dufner until he got up on the slippery 13th green. He was on the back fringe in three, still in position to make a nice clean par, but ran his wedge through the green and down the bank of the infamous hazard that runs in front.
That’s not the worst mistake, even though every pro in the field knows how careful they need to be with this green. Lying four, Dufner chipped up out the hazard but put a little too much loft on it, and the ball came right back … only this time it fully submerged in the hazard and he had to take a drop.
Now lying six, Dufner went some 20 yards back on the other side of the creek to take his drop. But he was clearly exasperated, and threw his pitch way past the pin to ensure he avoided the same false front that gobbled up the above shot. Finally, after that adventure where he went from 3 on the back of the green to 7 in the middle of the green, the reigning PGA Champion two-putted out for his quad 9.
Toward the end, the Auburn super fan looked like he had just about given up. The greens should only get quicker with no rain in the forecast the rest of the week, so we should see a little more of this. It’s not the worst score this relatively easier hole has ever seen.
Jason Dufner had some leeway at 13: a 9 doesn't threaten the record high of 13 by Tommy Nakajima in 1978.
