Rory McIlroy took a playful shot at the uber-confident Patrick Reed, one of the two Masters rookies the 24-year-old two-time major champion will play the first two rounds at Augusta with this week.
Rory McIlroy zings Patrick Reed over ‘top 5’ boast before Masters tee time together
Rory McIlroy knows what it’s like to be among the top five golfers in the world, and you Patrick Reed, are no top-5 player, the former No. 1 jokes during pre-Masters presser.

The Masters
During his Tuesday afternoon press conference, McIlroy learned he would be the grizzled vet of his threesome that will include 23-year-old Doral winner Reed and 2013 Rookie of the Year Jordan Spieth.
“Yeah, there’s going to be no top-five players in that group,” McIlroy cracked as the gathered scribes laughed knowingly.
Reed, you may recall, boasted after winning the WGC-Cadillac Championship that he belonged among the top five players in the world and took a lot of heat for what some considered unwarranted braggadocio.
But they already have a FIGJAM on the Tour. "@Pacduneslooper: I have no problems with any thing Patrick Reed just said."
— Kristen Williams (@TheGolfChick) March 9, 2014 Still, while Golf Channel’s Arron Oberholser took Reed to task for comments best blurted out “in the mirror, in the bathroom, when you’re home alone,” others enjoyed the brash boasting of the guy who bettered a Tiger Woods-free field of actual top players.
So Patrick Reed thinks he is really, really good and that’s a bad thing? Did everyone forget Phil Mickelson’s nickname?
— Shane Bacon (@shanebacon) March 9, 2014 Thursday, Reed, No. 23, will tee it up with the former No. 1, who’s now ranked ninth the world, and Spieth, who’s 13th. The trio, off Thursday at 10:52 a.m., should be fun to watch.
