Stormy weather at TPC Sawgrass delays final round of The Players Championship

Martin Kaymer was just five holes away from the biggest paycheck of his career when the horn blew at TPC Sawgrass.

Update 2: Martin Kaymer wins in a wild finish.

Update: Play resumed at 7:12 p.m. ET

Player Championship

With just about an hour left in the final round, we’ve hit a weather delay at The Players Championship. The severe weather was in the forecast, but the PGA Tour opted to keep the tee times as scheduled for Sunday’s final round. The skies started to darken a little after 5 p.m. ET, and after several minutes of rolling thunder, the horn finally blew at 5:39 p.m. ET.

The final pairing of Martin Kaymer and Jordan Spieth are in the middle of playing the 14th hole. Kaymer currently holds a three-shot lead over Jim Furyk, who’s trying to convert a charging Sunday round of 66. Furyk has just one putt left on the 18th green to complete his round, as the horn intervened while he spent his time lining up on the putting surface after just missing a birdie try.

Furyk is notorious for being one of the slowest players on Tour, and spent an interminable stretch before hitting a par putt on the 17th green. He couldn’t sneak his last one in before the delay, and NBC’s Johnny Miller, noted curmudgeon, showed no mercy:

For clarification, here’s why Furyk couldn’t finish up the hole and may now have to come back on Monday to make just one putt. If he does have to come back for just one stroke, he can take solace in the fact that he’s a local Ponte Vedra resident.

With just 11 players still on the course, even if Furyk makes that par putt, it’s Kaymer’s tournament to lose. The rest of the field can only hope for an implosion, or that the German dumps a couple in the water at the island hole or off the 18th tee.
