U.S. Open leaderboard 2014: Graeme McDowell tied for the clubhouse lead

The afternoon wave is beginning to make its way around Pinehurst and they are all chasing Graeme McDowell and Kevin Na, who are tied for the clubhouse lead.

Andrew Redington

The U.S. Open leaderboard has been in near-constant fluctuation during the first round with players picking up and dropping shots quickly as they battle the difficult conditions at Pinehurst. While the course is a challenge, a few players were able to card rounds in the red, including Graeme McDowell who is tied for the lead at 2-under.

McDowell, the 2010 U.S. Open champion, played a steady round with 15 pars. He dropped only a single shot, with a bogey on No. 4 and picked it right back up with an eagle on No. 5. The fifth hole has been the easiest hole on the course thus far and McDowell took advantage, carding one of three eagles. McDowell birdied the 14th hole to move to 2-under. After the round, McDowell said he doesn’t expect the winner to post many red numbers.

“I think the winner of this tournament will have 10-12 birdies maximum,” McDowell said, via Pinehurst Resort.

McDowell is currently tied for the lead with Kevin Na. Na was more up-and-down on his round, carding three birdies, three bogeys and an eagle. Matt Kuchar and Jordan Spieth both opened with 1-under rounds of 69 while Phil Mickelson got off to a solid start with an even-par 70.

Here is a quick look at the current state of the leaderboard. A live leaderboard can be found at USOpen.com.
