U.S. Open 2014 TV coverage and schedule for Friday’s round

With that caveat that Tiger Woods is not in the field, it would be hard to have a leaderboard much better than the one after the 2014 U.S. Open’s first round. The list of players in contention is long and loaded with notable names, nearly all of whom begin Friday within range of making a run. Viewers will able to watch the majority of the day live, thanks to extended coverage from ESPN and NBC.

Although live television coverage won’t begin until more than two hours after players start teeing off, there will be at least 10 hours of live television coverage. ESPN will once again lead off the coverage with its broadcast scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. ET. The coverage will continue on ESPN until 3:00 p.m., when it will shift to NBC for two hours. The day will wrap up back on ESPN from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the chance for extended coverage should the round run long. Assuming weather cooperates -- which is at least somewhat of a question based on the Friday forecast -- viewers will be able to watch live golf on television from 9:00 a.m. to at least 7:00 p.m.

The extended coverage from Pinehurst No. 2 means viewers won’t miss many of the pivotal second-round shots. A few notable players will tee off before coverage begins, including first-round leader Martin Kaymer. Kaymer is scheduled to play with Jason Dufner and Keegan Bradley in the second round and the three will step to the 10th tee at 8:02 a.m. The first hour of their rounds will occur before live coverage, but they’ll likely only be a couple holes into their round when ESPN begins its broadcast. All of the notable players in the afternoon (a list that includes Phil Mickelson, Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy, Just Rose and others) should get plenty of coverage.

Those not able to watch the round on television can still catch Chris Berman, Johnny Miller and the rest of the broadcast team online thanks to a pair of simulcast streams. Viewers with access to WatchESPN can watch a live online simulcast of both ESPN broadcast windows. The morning live stream will begin at 9:00 a.m. while the afternoon stream will begin at 5:00 p.m. NBC’s coverage will be available from NBC Sports LiveExtra.

In addition to the television coverage and simulcast streams, viewers will be able to watch additional coverage online or on their mobile device. ESPN3 will provide a dedicated stream to hole Nos. 9 and 18 while it and USOpen.com will each have a pair of featured group streams. Kaymer, Bradley and Dufner will be the morning featured group on USOpen.com while Mickelson, Rose and Matthew Fitzpatrick will be the afternoon marquee trio. The featured groups on ESPN3 will be Bubba Watson, Charl Schwartzel and Adam Scott in the morning with Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama and Rickie Fowler in the afternoon.

In addition to the extensive television and online coverage, PGA Tour Radio and ESPN Radio will both provide radio coverage of the second round.
