Round 3 pin placements for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst

With a little more moisture hitting the Pinehurst area on Friday night, it didn’t look like the conditions would change too much at the U.S. Open. But a steady wind and less humidity on Saturday morning should have things firmed up and running faster late in the day when the leaders tee off at 3:25 p.m. ET.

The 6th, 9th. and 15th greens are a few the USGA’s Mike Davis said he’d be watching most closely earlier in the week, with the characteristic Donald Ross “turtleback” design especially repellant in those locations. The putting surfaces should also be running around a 12 on the stimpmeter for the third round.

That back-right pin at the third hole, a drivable par-4 with the new tee the USGA has put in, could present a nice little eagle chance for some of the chasers early in their round. It’s a must-make birdie for anyone with designs of putting a scare into 36-hole leader Martin Kaymer, who’s up six shots.
