Martin Kaymer opened the final round of the 2014 U.S. Open with a five-stroke lead and if early indications hold true, the field will have to go very low to catch him. Kaymer has been steady on Sunday and remains five strokes ahead of the field.
U.S. Open leaderboard: Martin Kaymer moves to 9-under, 5 up
Martin Kaymer is off to a solid start in the final round and remains in the lead by five strokes.

Being in the lead at the U.S. Open can create a lot of added pressure and cause a player to falter. That hasn’t been the case with Kaymer at all. He continues to avoid major issue and play extremely solid, steady golf. He rolled in a lengthy par putt on the second to avoid an early dropped shot. He picked up a stroke on No. 3, rolling in a birdie to move to 9-under for the tournament. While his playing partner Rickie Fowler made an adventure of the fourth hole, Kaymer made an easy par. He missed a tricky birdie putt on No. 5, but finished the par to remain 9-under with 13 holes to play. The field will likely need him to falter significantly coming in as no player is making a strong surge into deep red figures.
Fowler began the round tied for second place at 3-over and five off the lead. He’s now seven strokes back, following a double bogey at No. 4. Fowler hit a pair of errant shots on the hole and needed to sink a long putt to even salvage a double bogey. Erik Compton is along in second place at 4-under. He parred the first four holes before hitting a great shot shot into the green at the par-5 fifth hole. He chipped up and made his birdie putt to get into red numbers. He’s 4-under through six holes.
