It’s been a very lucrative start to the summer for Martin Kaymer. Slightly more than a month after he won big at the Players Championship, Kaymer blew away the field at the U.S. Open and took home the $1.62 million first-place prize. Kaymer finished at 9-under, good enough to win by eight shots.
2014 U.S. Open purse: Martin Kaymer takes home $1.62 million in prize money
Martin Kaymer led wire-to-wire to win the 2014 U.S. Open and his efforts were rewarded with a very large winners share of the $9 million purse.

The win gave Kaymer the second-biggest payout of his career. He won $1.8 million at the Players Championship, giving him winnings of nearly $3.5 million in a little more than a month. That total nearly equals his career winnings on the PGA Tour which now move to slightly less than $8 million. The 29-year-old has had more success on the European Tour with his combined on-course career earnings now approaching $29 million.
The U.S. Open purse increased from $8 million to $9 million this season, giving Kaymer nearly $200,000 more than the $1.44 million Justin Rose won last year. None of the other players near the top of the leaderboard were able to seriously challenge Kaymer in the final round, but they will still be rewarded handsomely for their efforts. The payout was structured for the top 21 finishers to take home at least $101,487, according to GolfWeek. Ties played a major role in the final payout, with the set purse amounts combined then averaged for players finishing tied on the leaderboard. Even with the changes, 20 players won at least $100,000 while eight came away with at least $300,000 in winnings.
Phil Mickelson wasn’t able to play his way into contention to challenge for the career grand slam. He finished at 7-over and tied for 28th place. His result, however, will give one Callaway fan a $59,588 prize. Callaway ran a promotion prior to the tournament that allowed one person to win the same amount Mickelson earned at the U.S. Open. While that amount could have been $1.62 million had Mickelson won, someone will still receive a hefty prize.
