Michelle Wie twerks, fills U.S. Women’s Open trophy with 21 beers to celebrate 1st major

An American wins the national championship and celebrates accordingly.

David Cannon

While most of America was nervously sweating out the Portugal match Sunday night, Michelle Wie was rather enjoying her first major championship. Whenever Wie is involved in a major championship, it’s obviously very good for women’s golf, and her run at Pinehurst delivered the best ratings for the U.S. Women’s Open in seven years and a 92 percent increase over last year. But despite all that interest and appeal, she had never won a major until Sunday.

The former prodigy who teed it up with the men as a teenager was the subject of some harsh critiques at a very young age, but all those intervening struggles seem to have her in a really well-adjusted place. Her golf game has re-emerged, and she’s just extremely easy to root for ... which makes the scenes from the 24-year-old’s celebration on Sunday night that much more enjoyable. The festivities included a twerking interlude:

And for your edification, Wie’s first major championship trophy holds just over 21 beers.

Jason Dufner revealed to Howard Stern last August that he put 43 beers in his PGA Championship Wanamaker Trophy, one of the biggest in sports. The Claret Jug, maybe golf’s most famous hardware, is sipped out of almost every year by the new winner but holds just a fraction of what Wie and Dufner were able to pour.

Wie even did her trademark tabletop putting pose with new trophy.

Some of these videos were initially scrubbed probably due to “image concerns” but the way she celebrated only reinforces her likability at this stage of her career. So yeah, Wie enjoyed herself on Sunday night and we think it’s great and we’re very happy for her. Let’s hope it’s the first of several because she’s a superstar that’s good for golf.
