John Daly ‘Wacky Trouser Day’ slated for Irish Open

John Daly gets the Loudmouth treatment at the Irish Open.

John Daly is as well-known these days for his colorful golfing attire as he is for his performance on the course -- sometimes even more so. But it’s something when the Irish Open -- which expects the likes of homeboys Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Darren Clarke, and Padraig Harrington to compete in a talent-heavy field later this month -- chooses to spotlight Long John’s curious couture.

But that’s exactly what will go down, when the organizers of this year’s June 19-22 competition will welcome fans of Long John to “unleash their inner John Daly” and arrive on site for Friday’s second round wrapped in their Loudmouthiest attire.

Yup, June 20 will be “Wacky Trouser Day” at Fota Island Resort and spectators with the most outlandish outerwear will win actual cash money, as in an Emirates Airline voucher worth some $681 (it’s more romantic to note the amount is 500 in Euros) for the best getup.

“With John Daly famed as much for his eccentric trousers as his golfing prowess,” a promo for the wild day says, “each judge will have two-time Major winner in mind when they crown the overall golfing fashionista.”

Daly, by the way, has a busy few weeks on tap, including a start on Thursday in Memphis, the festivities across the Atlantic, and back home to West Virginia over the Fourth of July.

Daly, who has missed five cuts in just seven PGA Tour events this year, accepted sponsor invitations to the FedEx St. Jude Classic and the Greenbrier Classic.

No doubt, the PGA Tour’s fun-loving commissioner has a similar event planned to honor Mr. Daly. We’re thinking next year’s Phoenix Open?
