With heavy rain and thunderstorms hitting the Memphis area, players seemingly spent more time in weather delay than on the golf course during the first two rounds of the St. Jude Classic. There was a 3½-hour delay on Thursday which forced several players to finish their second rounds on Friday. There were a pair of weather suspensions on Friday, with play being called early for the day at just after 5:50 p.m. ET. As a result, only 32 players have completed the second round heading into Saturday.

A whopping 54 players are yet to even step to the first tee in the second round, making for a very long day on Saturday as the tournament will attempt to get back on schedule. Doing so may be easier said than done, however, with rain and possible thunderstorms in the forecast again. Getting back on schedule will be crucial with 41 of the 153 players in the field scheduled to play in the U.S. Open next week. A potential Monday finish would cause a conflict with practice rounds at the U.S. Open and could potentially cause some players to withdraw. Whether that becomes an issue remains to be seen.
Play is scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. on Saturday and players could remain on the course beyond 9 p.m. if weather permits. TV coverage was disrupted during the first two rounds with Golf Channel showing very little live golf thanks to the delays. That could happen again on Saturday, but for now, Golf Channel is scheduled to broadcast from 1 to 2:30 p.m. before CBS picks up coverage at 3 p.m. CBS’ broadcast is scheduled to run until 6 p.m., although it could be extended if play continues. Players played until well past 9 p.m. on Thursday. Both broadcasts will be available online with a simulcast of Golf Channel’s coverage available from Golf LiveExtra and a stream of the CBS coverage at CBSSports.com.

With so many players still needing to finish -- or even begin their second rounds -- third-round tee times likely won’t be out until early in the afternoon. Permitting weather, players will begin play at 8 a.m. and the cut will be made once the second round is complete. Third-round tee times -- likely in groups of three -- will be sorted and players will head back to the course.
