John Deere Classic 2014 results: Zach Johnson shoots 63, tied for the lead

Zach Johnson has had success at the John Deere, including a win in 2012. He’s off to another good start, following an opening round of 63.

Gregory Shamus

The John Deere Classic has been very kind to Zach Johnson in recent years. He won the event in 2012 and nearly repeated as champion last year, losing to Jordan Spieth in a playoff. It may be a new year, but once again Johnson is in contention. He shot an opening-round 63 on Thursday and is tied for the lead at 8-under with Rory Sabbatini and Brian Harman.

Early in his round, it appeared Johnson was going post an even lower number. He birdied his first hole and four of his first five. Following two more birdies on his opening nine, Johnson made the turn in 30. He stayed hot early on his second nine with back-to-back birdies on his 10th and 11th holes. At 8-under through 11, Johnson was threatening to shoot a 59. He didn’t have to do much work with his putter either, with a series of excellent approach shots setting up easy birdies, several in tap in range. He wasn’t able to keep the pace going, however, and finished his round with seven pars.

Like Johnson, Sabbatini turned in a clean card with no dropped shots and eight birdies. Harman surged on the back nine with six birdies on his final eight holes to move to eight under. Neither Sabbatini or Harman is currently qualified for the British Open, and with a bid on the line this week, a good showing could send them to Royal Liverpool.

Scores typically go low at the John Deere Classic and that was again the case. A total of 16 players shot 66 or better with 80 of the 155 players in the field carding a round in the red. Brendon de Jonge at 6-under, Ryan Moore at 5-under and Harris English at 4-under are among the players who got off to a good start. The first round didn’t go as well for everyone. David Duval, who is playing a final tuneup before the British Open next week, is 10-over following a round of 81.
