In yet another odd occurrence at a major championship involving a golf cart, police on Wednesday night arrested a man suspected of assault with a buggy after the alleged perp stole the vehicle from a British Open staging area and drove it into a security guard.

The incident, which occurred at about 7:30 p.m. local time on the eve of Thursday’s first round, marked the second straight grand slam event in which some Mensa candidate decided it would be a good idea to liberate a golf cart an proceed to create a modicum of mayhem with the conveyance. Merseyside police said in a statement to the Associated Press that the 45-year-old local man smacked into the guard, causing a minor leg injury.
“We can confirm that a man has been arrested following an incident at The Open golf practice day in Hoylake at about 7:30 p.m. this evening,” police told the AP. “One man was arrested on suspicion of assault ... Just before colliding with the barrier the buggy caught a security guard causing a slight injury to his leg.”
Flash back a month to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, where the driver of NBC analyst Roger Maltbie’s cart went for a joy ride and received for his efforts a DWI and an assault charge for hitting a state trooper with the cart.
“This is a new one,” Maltbie said during the Pinehurst competition. “I’ve been to a couple of rodeos and a county fair, and I’ve never had this happen.”
