Caddie Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay’s pained silence talks Phil Mickelson out of hitting driver

ESPN does a great job of getting microphones in place to pick up player reactions and discussions with caddies. It often adds a good deal of entertainment value that not every broadcast delivers, whether it’s a loud “JESUS CHRIST!“ from Tiger or a distraught ”Oh shit” from Phil Mickelson.

And no one talks through more shots with his caddie in front of these mics than Phil Mickelson. Many times it’s insightful, and occasionally comical. This was one of those times.

For the record, Phil did take his caddie’s silence, which went on for another good 10 seconds, as a sign and decided to keep the driver in the bag. Mickelson had just bombed one off the course and out of bounds at the 10th, and had struggled to hit fairways all day. This layup led to a routine par.
