The Open Championship projected cut: Bubba Watson, Ernie Els may be headed home early

The course is playing tough in the afternoon and the cut line could still move, but Bubba Watson is among the players currently in danger of missing the cut.

Update: Watson heads home, Tiger barely makes cut

The afternoon wave is taking its turn at Royal Liverpool and depending on how the late groups fare, a couple big names may take an early exit from the 2014 British Open. Bubba Watson is among the players who could be set for a short stay in England as he’ll need help to make the cut.

Birdies are becoming more rare as the second round goes on, but the cut line remains at 2-over. There are currently 76 players at 2-under or better, leaving the possibility that the cut line will move at least a stroke. Royal Liverpool is playing more difficult on Friday than it did on Thursday and only getting firmer as the round progresses. It wouldn’t necessarily be a surprise to see the cut line move to 3-over and even 4-over is a possibility depending on how things go.

Watson is among the players currently on the wrong side of the cut line. The Masters champion played better on Friday than he did in the opening round, but was still unable to make up any ground. He bogeyed three of his final five holes, including No. 18 to drop to 4-over for the tournament. That final bogey may prove to be costly if the cut line settles at 3-over. Watson missed the cut at the U.S. Open and could be headed for back-to-back missed cuts in majors following his win at Augusta.

Lee Westwood is just on the edge of the cut line at 3-over. He’ll need some of the players still on the course to falter if he’s going to be around for the weekend. Two-time British Open champion Ernie Els is among the players headed home early. He followed an opening round 79 with a 73, but will miss the cut at 8-over. Patrick Reed, Jonas Blixt and Billy Horschel are among the names currently on the wrong side of the cut line.

Jason Day, Zach Johnson and Brandt Snedeker haven’t played well thus far, but all three are at 2-over and are likely safe for the weekend. Tiger Woods started the day well clear of the cut at 3-under, but he’s moving closer to a potential early exit. Woods is 3-over on his round and even-par for the tournament through five holes. If the struggles continue, he may be in danger of missing the weekend.
