2014 British Open weather forecast: Heavy storms impact Saturday’s third round at Hoylake

Showers and possible strong thunderstorms will impact play at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club on Saturday.

A strong storm system moving over Great Britain will bring areas of heavy rain and even the possibility of strong to potentially strong storms over the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. Because of the threat of severe weather, for the first time in the 143-year history of the Open Championship, players will go off split tees.

Like in the United States, storms today could have torrential rain, strong gusty winds and frequent lightning. Many indications from the weather data I look at reveal that this system could keep these showers and storms around for a good chunk of the day. I expect this threat to continue through the morning and into the afternoon. There could be occasional breaks for sunshine but expect inclement weather for most of the day.

SATURDAY - THIRD ROUND WEATHER FORECAST

Showers and storms are likely today. Some of these storms could be strong to severe. While the sustained winds won’t be as strong as they were on Friday with winds out of the south between 5 to 15 mph, these storms could produce gusty winds, heavy rain, large hail and, of course, frequent lightning. Temperatures with cloudy skies should be near 70 degrees.

SUNDAY - FINAL ROUND WEATHER FORECAST

The final round will be drier with less active weather but breezy conditions return. The forecast for Sunday is partly sunny with an afternoon high temperature around 70 degrees. Winds will be out of the northwest between 10 to 20 mph.
