UPDATE: Rory McIlroy took the victory on Sunday. Woods finished in 69th place.
Tiger Woods is cursing, throwing clubs, and ready to leave the British Open
Woods round goes off the rails and the 14-time major winner is ready to go home.
Tiger Woods may have started Sunday at the British Open with some pretense of putting together a competitive round, but on the back nine, his game has spiraled downward and now he just wants to get off the course.
Tiger hasn’t hit a really good shot since he made the turn. There have been misfires off the tee, horrible approach shots, and shaky chips. There wasn’t much pressure on him to start the round, and he spent much of the front nine joking around with Jason Dufner and quickly working his way through the course.
But now, he’s running hot and looks awful.
He lost a 2-iron approach shot at the 10th, leading to a disappointing par on the easier par-5. At the 11th, his approach shot was much worse. He had just a basic wedge shot from a distance Andy North said 90 percent of the pros would put within 15 feet of the hole. Woods completely missed the green, just flipping it off to the right and short of the putting surface. After the shot on 10, he just let his club fly through the follow through. He held onto the club at 11, but he wasn’t happy with his tool.
So there were those two ghastly approach shots. How about the tee ball -- maybe get that working at the 12th?
That ended up in some hay way off to the left. That tall stuff would make it impossible for Woods to put a good swing on it, and he yanked one left to send the crowd scattering.
So in three holes, where he carded a five on each, we had:
- one follow-through club toss
- one mimed smash of his wedge into the fairway
- one (audible) f-bomb
- two angry slams into the turf with a wood
- two separate galleries taking cover
Tiger is now 7-over for the championship. There are only two players lower on the leaderboard. The jet to Florida is already fueled up and waiting on the tarmac.
