PGA Championship tee times: Start time and pairings for Sunday’s final round

Sunday afternoon is the last major round of the season, and judging from the bottom of the tee sheet, it should be the most fun and dramatic.

There are just 18 holes left of major championship golf left in the 2014 season, and we have our best chance yet for a dramatic final round. The first three majors have fizzled out on Sunday, with Bubba Watson locking up the Masters at the turn, Martin Kaymer winning the U.S. Open by Friday, and Rory McIlroy going wire-to-wire comfortably at the Open. Rory is a heavy favorite again, but he’s got a loaded leaderboard behind him chasing over the final 18 holes.

McIlroy shot an “ugly” 4-under round of 67 on Saturday, hitting some of his shakier shots of the week but still managing to finish back in front by one. He had a couple loose drives compared to the unsustainable show he’s put on with that club the past month, but he’s still farther and better than anyone else. His best is still better than everyone else’s, but there’s hope for the rest of the field at least this time around.

Of all the decorated and highly ranked players around McIlroy, he'll play with the least accomplished and most unknown one. Bernd Wiesberger, an Austrian, put on a show coming into the clubhouse on Saturday, carding birdies on his last three holes of the day to get to 12-under. His approach shot into the 17th hole was the shot of the day, and was an inch away from rolling in for an eagle that would have given him a co-share of the lead (GIF via Adam Sarson)863024041.0.gif

And that’s how you need less that four feet of putts to make three birdies in three holes. Now Wiesberger, who had never shot a round under par at major before this week, will play with the No. 1 player in the world who’s bolting to his place as the next legend of the game. The Austrian didn’t struggle too much playing with the starpower of Phil Mickelson on Saturday, but the last pairing at a major championship, and with Rory, will change the equation.

The more likely challenger to McIlroy will come from the penultimate group, where Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler reside. Those two are both currently under the tutelage of Butch Harmon, and have become some of the closer colleagues on Tour. They almost always play practice rounds together, and often pair up when they do. Fowler sought out Mickelson for tips and advice over the past few years, and the two clearly get along well. They’re also some of the only Americans playing competent golf right now. Given their familiarity and friendship, this should be a comfortable stroll for both. One, or both, just needs to send a few roars up from the crowd ahead of Rory and make him start working in that final group. They’ll have the largest crowds and the loudest cheers.

It should be a fun Sunday afternoon, building off the madness of Saturday, which quickly turned into the most exciting major championship round of the season. Valhalla is yielding so many birdies right now that Rory won’t be able to just sit on the lead. There’s too much talent, beyond just Phil and Rickie, within range and likely to post a mid-60s round on Sunday. Here’s your final round tee sheet at Valhalla:

UPDATE: A rain delay has pushed the tee times back for the final pairings, and it’s going to be close getting the final round in by sunset at 8:42 p.m. in Louisville. Here’s the updated tee sheet.
