Wyndham Championship 2014: Tee times, TV schedule, streaming for Thursday’s round in Greensboro

The PGA Tour regular season concludes this week Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Streeter Lecka

A week after the PGA Championship and a week before the start of the FedExCup Playoffs, the Wyndham Championship is often easily overlooked. It doesn’t draw the same quality field of the tournaments surrounding it on the calendar, and the stakes are much lower. Of course, there is still plenty on the line. The big names may not be teeing it up, but a number of players in the field will be playing to secure their place on the PGA Tour next season. The first round begins Thursday.

The players who finish in the top 125 of the FedExCup standings qualify for the playoffs and secure a Tour card for next season. For those right on the bubble, this week could be the difference between full-time status next year and being forced to try to play their way back to the PGA Tour on the Web.com Tour. Jhonattan Vegas at No. 124 will be one of seven players in the field ranked between No. 124 and No. 130 in the FedExCup standings. Paul Casey at No. 125, Sang-Moon Bae at No. 126 and J.J. Henry at No. 130 are among the others. Bae has an exemption next season, and Casey’s Tour card is fairly secure thanks to his No. 114 ranking on the money list. Henry, however, is playing for a spot in the playoffs and exempt status next year. He’s one of eight players who have finished in the top 125 of the money list every year since 2001.

Henry and Bae will be paired together on Thursday, teeing off No. 10 at 7:50 a.m. ET along with Mark Wilson.

Not every player will be playing for a spot in the playoffs or for their Tour status. Patrick Reed is secure in both areas, but will tee up Thursday to begin the defense of his title from last year. He will play in one of the most notable pairings of the first round, joined by Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker. The three will be in the afternoon wave on Thursday, teeing off at 12:55 p.m.

Golf Channel will provide television coverage of the first round from 3 to 6 p.m. The coverage will also be available via a live simulcast stream online from NBC LiveExtra. More than half the field will likely be done with their first rounds by the time coverage begins, but the broadcast will allow viewers to see some of the afternoon wave play live.
