2014 Wyndham Championship: Nick Watney takes the 54-hole lead

A bogey-free round helped vault Nick Watney into the lead at the Wyndham Championship.

Darren Carroll

While Nick Watney walked to the 18th green, it appeared he was on his way to capturing a share of the clubhouse lead in the Wyndham Championship. His approach shot missed the green, leaving an up-and-down for par to finish at 13-under. He didn’t settle for par, though, holing a long putt from off the green for a birdie and the 54-hole lead.

Watney sits at 14-under, one stroke ahead of Brad Fritsch. Freddie Jacobson and Heath Slocum are two shots off the lead while nine other players are at 10-under or better. Scoring conditions were once again favorable, leading to a number of players scoring in the mid-60s. That included Watney and Fritsch, both of who moved up the leaderboard with rounds of 65. Andres Romero turned in the round of the day, carding a 6-under round of 64.

With so many players racking up red numbers, it took a good scoring round to even keep pace. Andrew Svoboda opened the round one stroke off the lead. He shot an even-par round of 70, causing him to drop from a tie for third to a tie for 14th and five strokes back.

Watney will open the final round in position to record his first PGA Tour win since 2012. He’ll play in the final group on Sunday, but holding the 54-hole lead hasn’t always led to success for Watney. This is the seventh time he’s held a 54-hole lead in a PGA Tour event, and he won only one of the previous six tournaments. If he wins on Sunday, he will have to hold off a couple of big names including Brandt Snedeker and Webb Simpson. Both shot 66 in the third round and are 11-under through 54 holes.

Here is a complete look at the leaderboard through the third round:
