Kevin Sutherland shoots first ever round of 59 on Champions Tour

After playing the first eight holes in 9-under and just missing a par putt for 58, Sutherland becomes the first golfer on the 50-and-over Tour to break 60.

It’s a relatively quiet week in the golf world, with the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship sandwiched in between the season’s final major and the start of the FedExCup. But over on the Champions Tour, Kevin Sutherland made some history on Saturday at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open, becoming the first ever to break 60 on the senior circuit.

Sutherland’s second round 59 at En-Joie Golf Club in Endicott, NY shot him up the leaderboard and into first place by a shot. While there have been six players to break 60 on the PGA Tour, no one has done it on the Champions Tour, which is a bit surprising given some of the easier courses on that rota. Suthlerland, however, was one burned edge away from shooting a 58, his par putt at the last just missing the cup on the high side. He made the comebacker from a nervy distance to join the “59 Club” even with a bogey on the scorecard. Here’s the final putt to clinch it:

Fellow Champions Tour competitor and fellow 59 Club member Paul Goydos was right there off the 18th green waiting to congratulate Sutherland. Goydos holds one of the six PGA Tour rounds under 60, firing a 12-under 59 in 2010 at the John Deere Classic.

Sutherland did most of his work on the front nine, playing his first eight holes in 9-under. The front nine at En-Joie plays to par 37, and Sutherland went out in a ridiculous 28. From there, the #59watch was on throughout the back nine, transforming into a #58watch as he came down the stretch and played the 18th.

This is just the third Champions Tour event of the season for Suthlerland, who has also played a Web.com Tour event and qualified for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst back in June. In front by a shot, he’ll be in the final group on Sunday with Steve Lowery and John Cook.
